Seena is an artist living in New York City. I met Seena when she was fighting to keep her apartment, a classic six stuffed with paintings and artistic assemblages. She had been living in this apartment for over 30 years and her rent was well below market value. My photographs document Seena at a challenging stage of her life. She was visibly aging and living in a society that tends to devalue older individuals. That is especially reflected in the media’s manufactured ideal of perfection. Seena’s struggle was figuring out how to avoid becoming a society throwaway and holding onto herself during this transitional phase. |
